Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy in Cape Town – Gentle Detox & Post-Surgery Support

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) at FL Aesthetic Clinic Beauty and Health is a specialised, gentle therapy that supports your body’s natural detoxification, reduces swelling, improves circulation and boosts immunity. Performed by a qualified holistic practitioner and IPHM member, our Vodder-inspired MLD sessions are ideal for clients seeking recovery after surgery (including liposuction), relief from water retention, relief from chronic swelling, improved skin clarity, and a profound sense of wellbeing.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

The lymphatic system removes waste, transports immune cells and manages fluid balance in the body. When lymph flow is sluggish due to surgery, injury, stress, or lifestyle factors, fluid can build up causing puffiness, heaviness, and slowed healing. Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses very light, rhythmical hand techniques to stimulate lymph vessels, guiding stagnant fluid toward the body’s lymph nodes where it can be filtered and removed naturally. Unlike deep tissue massage, MLD is slow, gentle and deeply restorative.

Key Benefits

  • Reduces swelling and bruising — essential for post-operative recovery including after liposuction and body contouring procedures.
  • Supports detoxification — encourages the removal of metabolic waste and toxins for improved energy and vitality.
  • Boosts immune function — enhances lymph flow to support immune response and faster recovery from illness.
  • Improves skin health — reduces facial puffiness, promotes a clearer complexion and can help with inflammatory skin conditions.
  • Relieves sinus and head congestion — gentle techniques can ease sinus pressure and support breathing.
  • Promotes relaxation and stress relief — the calming rhythm of MLD soothes the nervous system and reduces anxiety.

Who Can Benefit?

MLD is safe for most adults and is commonly used by people who:

  • Have recently had cosmetic surgery (liposuction, tummy tuck, BBL) and need post-operative support
  • Suffer from lymphoedema, chronic swelling or fluid retention
  • Experience facial puffiness, sinus congestion or post-travel swelling
  • Want a natural detox and immune support
  • Seek relief from tired, heavy legs or poor circulation
  • Wish to complement other treatments such as facials, body scrubs or sports therapy

What Happens During a Session?

Your MLD session begins with a short consultation to review your health history, current concerns and any post-surgery instructions from your surgeon (if applicable). You will lie comfortably on the treatment couch in a calm, warm room. The therapist uses very light, wave-like movements across key lymphatic pathways: neck, clavicle, abdomen and limbs. Treatments are relaxing and non-invasive — many clients fall asleep while receiving MLD.

Sessions usually last between 45, 60 , 90 minutes depending on your needs. After treatment you may notice immediate reduction in swelling and a feeling of lightness. For post-operative clients, MLD is typically initiated after the surgeon’s clearance and scheduled according to a tailored recovery plan.

MLD for Post-Liposuction Recovery

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is widely recommended following liposuction and other body contouring procedures. Gentle MLD helps:

  • Reduce post-operative swelling and bruising faster
  • Minimise fibrosis and scar tissue formation
  • Improve comfort and mobility during recovery
  • Enhance overall healing and contour definition

At FL Aesthetic Clinic we work with each client’s surgeon instructions and design a MLD schedule that supports safe, effective recovery. Note: MLD after surgery should only commence once your surgeon has cleared you for manual therapy.

Complementary Products & Oils

MLD works well with light-weight, non-greasy oils that allow gentle glide without heavy pressure. We use carefully selected products such as jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil and Arnicamill massage oil when appropriate. These oils are chosen for their skin-friendly properties and ability to support comfort during treatment. If you have allergies or sensitivities, we will always choose alternatives that suit your skin.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

Results vary by individual, but a common recommendation is:

  • Single session: suitable for detox, sinus relief or immediate relaxation.
  • 3–6 sessions: effective for moderate swelling, travel-related fluid retention and improved circulation.
  • 6–12+ sessions: recommended for post-surgery recovery, chronic lymphoedema or long-term detoxification plans.

During your consultation we will create a personalised plan based on your goals and progress.

Safety & Contraindications

MLD is gentle and safe, but certain medical conditions require caution. Please inform us if you have:

  • Acute infection or fever
  • Uncontrolled heart conditions
  • Active blood clots or thrombosis
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Recent major surgery without medical clearance

We will assess your medical history and, when necessary, liaise with your medical practitioner to ensure MLD is appropriate for you.
